The survey said domestic travel would revive the Philippine travel industry, with 77 percent of respondents willing to travel to local destinations once restrictions were lifted. Popular tourist destinations, especially beaches, are expected to see an increase in visitors. When travel is allowed again, Boraki, Siargao and Baguio top the list of places to visit. The Philippines also prefers to travel to places close to home.

The majority of respondents also prefer activities that they consider “safe” with limited facial interactions. The travel trip activities they have in mind are beach trip, road trip and station, 69, 54 and 41 percent respectively.

Domestic travel will be a top priority as very few people are likely to travel internationally in the near future. This is due to the reduction in income and travel budgets in light of the impact of epidemics on the economy. Passengers are also less likely to buy travel deals and packages anytime soon.

Domestic tourism is the largest partner in the Philippine tourism industry with revenues of P3.14 trillion. This is 10.8 per cent of the tourism industry’s 12.7 per cent share in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) last year.

Digital shift

Travel plans are also largely digital, as 72% of travelers book travel arrangements directly and independently with online companies. About half of the respondents will also go with online travel agencies and collectors.

Connection reduction channels will become the norm. The majority of Filipinos expect the introduction of self-service services such as check-in and digital payments for services made by tourism companies.

The convenience of these arrangements helped to make domestic travel a major part of the overall travel expenses. In 2019, the industry accounted for about 75% of domestic travel spending, and due to international sanctions, this number is expected to increase in the future.

Health and safety is still a top priority for travelers

Although the Philippines has expressed a desire to travel with the lifting of sanctions, its real concern is its health and safety. Many people said that once a reliable anti-COVID-19 vaccine or treatment becomes available, and when the situation in the country improves, they will feel comfortable visiting.

The epidemic has boosted travelers’ health and safety expectations, with more than 80 percent of respondents expecting tourism agencies to adhere to best hygiene and health practices. At least 88% of respondents also agreed to comply with existing health and safety protocols, such as a rapid COVID-19 test before departure and a medical certificate before travel.

Restoring passenger confidence and trust in industries is essential to ensure its recovery. The report recommends that agencies and organizations emphasize safety and be transparent in addressing consumer concerns.
